Equestrian Grade Silica Sand

Our equestrian grade Cheshire silica sand is supplied in partnership with trusted UK quarry specialists. It’s a high-silica, fine sand chosen specifically for riding arenas and ménages, providing a consistent, supportive surface for both horses and riders.

Why silica sand is used for arenas

  • Sub-angular grains – the grains lock together to create a firm, stable footing rather than a loose, “deep” surface.
  • Washed and low in clay/silt – helps the surface drain freely and reduces the risk of it clogging or riding dead.
  • Free-draining but moisture-retentive – sheds excess water in wet weather, yet holds enough moisture to keep dust down in dry spells.
  • Comfortable under hoof – designed to offer a cushioned, forgiving ride while still giving your horse security and grip.

Typical uses

  • Outdoor and indoor riding arenas / ménages
  • Lunge pens and round pens
  • Gallops, canter tracks and turnout areas
  • Schooling and exercise arenas on private yards

Pairing with rubber

For many arenas the best results come from using silica sand as the base with an equestrian rubber chip topper. The sand provides the structure and drainage, while the rubber adds extra cushioning, stability and frost resistance.

Depth & installation guidance

Every arena build is different, so the final design and depth should always be confirmed with your arena contractor or engineer. As a very general guide, many arenas aim for a settled sand depth in the region of 100–150 mm, with the upper end of that range typically used when sand is being topped with rubber.

Regular grooming and occasional watering during very dry weather will help the surface stay compact, consistent and low-dust.

Equestrian Sand Calculator

Use this calculator to estimate how many tonnes of equestrian grade silica sand you’ll need for your arena.

Estimated Quantities

Area:

Sand @ 100 mm (4"): tonnes

Sand @ 150 mm (6"): tonnes

These figures are an approximate guide based on typical arena builds. Final depths and quantities should always be confirmed with your arena contractor or engineer.

Silica Sand Quote Request

Silica sand is supplied on a per-quotation basis, with delivery charges included per tonne. Typical lead time is ~7 days, subject to availability. Loose supply only.

Sand is delivered in up to a maximum of 20 tonnes per load, a quote price will be for the sand per tonne including delivery.

Equestrian Sand – Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about equestrian silica sand? Open the sections below for quick answers on depth, quantities, maintenance and delivery.

What depth of silica sand do I need for my arena?

As a general guide, many arenas aim for a working depth of around 100 mm (4") of silica sand. In some cases a slightly deeper layer is laid initially (up to around 150 mm / 6") to allow for compaction over time, or where the surface will be sand-only. Final depths should always be confirmed with your arena contractor or engineer.

How do I work out how many tonnes of sand I need?

You can use our sand calculator on this page to estimate tonnage for both 100 mm (4") and 150 mm (6") depths. Just enter your arena dimensions (square, rectangular or circular) and it will give an approximate tonnage. If you’re unsure, send us your measurements and we can double-check the figures for you.

Can I use this sand with an equestrian rubber topper?

Yes – this is exactly the type of sub-angular, low-clay silica sand that is typically used under an equestrian rubber chip topper. The sand provides structure and drainage, while the rubber adds extra cushioning, stability and frost resistance. We can help you work out quantities for both sand and rubber for your arena size.

How do I look after a silica sand arena?

Regular grooming with a suitable arena grader will keep the surface even and stop it from tracking or becoming deep in certain areas. During very dry weather, occasional light watering can help keep dust down and maintain a more consistent footing. Over time some sand may be lost through wind and use, and small top-ups can be added as needed.

How is the sand delivered and what access do I need?

Sand is usually delivered in bulk by tipper vehicle. We’ll confirm vehicle size when quoting, but as a guide you’ll typically need access suitable for an 8-wheel tipper or similar. If your access is restricted, let us know and we’ll look at alternative options where possible.

Can I just top up an existing arena rather than start again?

In many cases, yes. If your base and drainage are still in good condition, a sand top-up can freshen the surface and restore depth without a full rebuild. Use the calculator’s tonnage as a guide and contact us with photos of your existing arena if you’re unsure how much you need.
